Rudbeckia hirta is native to eastern and central North America; introduced on the West Coast (Washington to California), in Europe, and China. It grows in meadows, prairies, pastures, old fields, and open woodlands; sea level to 500 m. Annual, biennial or perennial herb; 30-100 cm in height. The stem is hispid to hirsute. The leaves are elliptic, lanceolate, or ovate, with entire or serrated margins; covered by coarse hair. The flower heads (up to 10 cm in diameter) borne singly or in loose arrays; 8-16 yellow to yellow-orange ray florets; brown-purple disc florets. Black-eyed Susan flowers from late spring into autumn.
